Breast surgery can either be performed in an immediate reconstruction, performed at the same time as a masectomy, or as a delayed reconstruction, a few months or years after surgery. For the type of breast reconstruction, doctor will determine exactly what type of reconstruction patient need. He may choose to put an expander or breast implant in, at that time or a later date. Alternatively, he may choose patient’s own body tissue which is used to help re-construct the breast. Again, that can be done either at the same time or as a delayed reconstruction.A patient’s own body tissue is used in numerous operations known as a TRAM, DIEP and EARLi procedures. Breast reconstruction often takes place immediately after a breast is removed (mastectomy) while the patient is still under anesthesia.
