Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most popular anti-aging remedies. It improves the appearance of lines or wrinkles, scars and hyperpigmentation (discolored areas of the skin), around the eyes and mouth. It can also be used to treat large areas of the face. Laser skin resurfacing involves the application of laser light to the skin to remove fine wrinkles and tighten the skin surface.

| Risks |
| The risks of laser skin resurfacing include burns and other injuries associated with the laser's heat, scarring, abnormal pigmentation and infection. In rare cases, dormant viruses such as herpes or infections may be found by laser treatment. The formation of milia, bumps that are formed due to obstruction of the sweat glands can occur but it can be treated after healing with retinoic acid. |
|
| Technology |
Before the resurfacing begins, some oral medication such as antiviral, antibacterial or anti-yeast medication is given to relax the patient and reduce pain and to prevent any complications such as awakening of dormant virus. For treating small areas, local topical (surface-applied) anesthetics are often used to numb the area. For large areas, nerve block-type anesthesia is used. Laser surgeons use conscious sedation (twilight anesthesia) alone or in combination with other techniques.
During the procedure, the patient lies on his or her back on the surgical table, covering eyes to protect them from the laser light. Laser passes are being performed over the area, depending on the depth of the wrinkle, scar or discoloration, the laser may be moved over the area repeatedly. It removes the outer skin layers to uncover the layer not affected by imperfections. It feels like a rubber band is being gently rubed against your skin. Once that layer is exposed, healing can begin to rebuild new skin that looks younger and does not have the imperfections. The process may be performed in two or more sessions for deeper areas, but one procedure is normally enough.
